Abstract: Everything you ever wanted to know about optical networking but were afraid to ask. Example topics include: * How fiber works (the basics, fiber types and limitations, etc) * Working with optics (choosing the right type, designing optical networks, etc) * Optical power (understanding dBm, loss, using light meters, etc) * DWDM (how it works, muxes, oadms, amps, etc) * Dispersion (what is it, why do we care, how do we fix it) * Optical Myths (can I hurt myself looking into fiber, can I overload my optic)

Tutorial: Traceroute
Meeting: Road14
Date / Time: 2017-01-15 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Room: Pacific 3&4
Presenters: Speakers:

Dani Roisman, NANOG PC Vice Chair, and Vice President of Network Operations, SoftLayer Technologies

Dani Roisman is currently the VP of Network Operations at SoftLayer Technologies (merged with The Planet Internet Services in Nov 2010), where he oversees the teams that run the network supporting over 80,000 managed servers across 11 datacenters. Prior to SoftLayer/The Planet, he was the Senior Network Architect and Network Engineering Team Lead at Peak Web Consulting, and prior to that Director of Network Engineering and Facilities Architecture at Sony Online Entertainment. Dani has specialized in large content datacenters and networks, with a focus on peering and multi-homing to reduce costs, improve customer negotiating stance, as well as increased network capacity, performance, and fault-tolerance. His network design and implementation accomplishments include massively-multiplayer games (EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, and PlanetSide) and social networking deployments hosting over 5,000 servers across 9 datacenters with Internet bandwidth capacities reaching 250Gbps.
Abstract: Many people think they understand how to use and understand traceroute, yet the large number of traceroute based tickets at any sizable ISP proves that the vast majority of people do not. Even the ISPs themselves are frequently unable to come up with staff who are qualified to look at a traceroute and interpret it correctly. This presentation identifies how to accurately interpret traceroute results.
