Jared Reimer

Jared Reimer is Cascadeo's CTO and a long-time advisor to the Seattle Internet eXchange. One of the early participants and board members of the SIX, he was involved in early policy and decision-making that enabled growth over the SIX’s 20-year history. Jared previously worked in the early ISP and hosting industries. Cascadeo has grown from pre-cloud consulting work a decade ago to a top-tier consulting partner to AWS, Google, Chef, and others. With operations in the US and Asia, Cascadeo provides cloud architecture, implementation, and managed operations services. Recent areas of focus at Cascadeo include continuously-available and self-healing distributed systems, cloud-scale telemetry and predictive analytics. Jared holds a MS of CS&E from the Univ. of Washington and lives in nearby Mercer Island with his wife, two dogs, and three young children. He has served as a senior technical advisor to HBO’s comedy “Silicon Valley."
Abstract: The Seattle Internet Exchange was inspired by a 111ms RTT between two networks on the same floor of the Westin Building carrier hotel. Direct connection of those networks, and the addition of a third, resulted in the exchange point launching in June 1997. This presentation introduces the SIX and recounts how it surmounted the technical, business, and organizational challenges it faced. Where does the SIX stand after 20 years and what could that mean for other community IXPs?
