NANOG Meeting Presentation Abstract

Deployment of 32 bit AS Numbers
Meeting: NANOG39
Date / Time: 2007-02-06 11:00am - 11:30am
Room: Osgoode Ballroom
Presenters: Speakers:

Henk Uijterwaal, RIPE NCC

Henk Uijterwaal has been at the RIPE NCC since 1997. He is currently the Senior Project Manager. The SPM is responsible for large technical projects both inside and outside the organization.
Abstract: This talk will consist of two parts:

* A summary of the policy changes made in proposal 2005-12 (in the RIPE Region and similar in the ARIN region) and the consequences it has when applying for an ASN.

* An overview of changes we have to make at the RIPE NCC in order to be able to handle 32-bit ASNs. This includes changes to our general infrastructure, documentation and supporting systems. The talk will give operators an idea of the work involved and, hopefully, trigger thought about how to approach this now, rather than wait until January 2009 when requests for an ASN will return a 32-bit number.

This talk will be roughly based on what I said at RIPE 53 with the main difference being that the RIPE 53 talk was about a project that just started with lots of unknowns, while this talk is about a project that will be (almost) finished and where we hit (and hopefully) solved all the issues one encounters when implementing plans.
