Presenters:	Speakers: Ignas Bagdonas, Routing System Ltd Ignas Bagdonas is a network architect focusing on evolution of Internet routing and transport infrastructure.
Abstract:	The fundamental aspect in dealing with routing system is not to touch it if it works. New functionality is added in via extending existing or defining new control plane protocols and containing all the internal state closed. Applications that could benefit from having a look at the innards of the routing system state are left with no choice but vendor and platform dependent interfaces that impose their own level of restrictions and visibility. New work has started in IETF on defining programmatic bidirectional interface into the routing system for exporting and modifying the state associated with routing functions of an individual network element. This mechanism allows for applications to get more awareness of underlying network topology and operational state, and also directly manipulate the operation of what was previously known as control plane. Many architectures and protocol mechanisms can be defined but for them to be practical, they need to be backed by realistic use cases. The two goals of this talk are to give a marketing-free introduction of Interface to Routing System (I2RS) architectural aspects, and to discuss practical use cases and gather feedback from operational community whether this approach would be applicable in solving practical problems.
