Open router OS architecture– A fast path to Operator developed router features

Presenters:	Speakers: Brian Field, Comcast Brian Field is a Fellow with Comcast. He is currently working on CDN and related architectures. Previously, Brian was involved in a number of network and video initiatives within Comcast. Previous to Comcast, Brian worked at ATT Broadband, MediaOne and USWest. Brian has a PhD in Computer Science.
Abstract:	The ability for network operators to code new control-plane capabilities and execute these capabilities directly on commercial router platforms is one of the exciting unexplored possibilities within the SDN domain. Along these lines, Comcast is interested in IPv6 Segment Routing— a new technology introduced to the IETF in 2013. Given the newness of Segment Routing, there is no support for SR on current router platforms. In order to explore the possibilities of Segment Routing (SR), Comcast developed proof-of-concept SR code from scratch using the Go language. We then compiled this code, creating a binary, which we then execute directly on an open router platform from one of our commercial vendors-- thus adding SR capability to the vendor's platform— without any development required or performed by the router vendor. This talk details the ongoing evolution in the SDN/router platform space, and how we leveraged the open eco system of a current generation router platform to prototype SR functionality. We then suggest how this open router eco system coupled with the approach leveraged might be an alternative approach to "SDN".
