Ralf Muehlen, Internet Archive

Ralf Muehlen is a programmer, network architect and maker. He builds non-traditional data centers and runs the global network of the Internet Archive. Dedicated to open access, Muehlen helps build community networks in San Francisco, Richmond, Chapel Hill and Burning Man.
Abstract: SNMP-based power and climate monitoring has been around for over a decade, but it has not been fun to implement, to sa
y the least. The arrival of consumer-oriented, user-friendly, networked devices lowers the bar for bulding sensor netw
orks, in terms of expertise needed, time to implement and cost.

Frustrated by the standard products for industrial users, Ralf Muehlen built a whole-data center smart meter from low-end parts. This grew into a multi-site networked system that ties together climate control, power, alarm systems and access control.

In this session, Muehlen will show how to get started with inexpensive off-the-shelf products, how to apply them to new applications, and how to safely take the big step from monitoring to affecting physical changes in the real world.
