Elisa Jasinska, Netflix

Elisa Jasinska started her Internet career as a Network Engineer at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange in 2005. Over the years, she has implemented numerous traffic accounting solutions, as well as many automation tools and systems for various employers. She takes great pleasure in discovering new technologies, solving problems and actively participating in the Internet community. Elisa joined Netflix as a Senior Network Toolsmith in 2013 and she enjoys watching TV for a living ever since.

Paolo Lucente, pmacct

I currently work as Senior Network Consultant at Cisco Systems, part of the Service Provider Software & Applications Group. I'm also the author of the free, open-source software package pmacct. Along with years of experience in the network operators arena, i bring an interest in the economics of traffic exchange in the public internet and i'm a contributor in many community forums, particularly in Europe. Previously, i've covered senior engineering and development positions at some large national and international service providers across Europe and the regional research network in my home land in south Italy - Apulia.
Abstract: We will explain how to correlate NetFlow in a BGP multi-path setup, by applying BGP ADD-PATH data to reveal where traffic goes to.

Since NetFlow doesn't carry BGP information in itself, a subsequent path match in our favorite open source NetFlow accounting software pmacct determines statistics based on BGP data. Netflix uses a modified BGP behavior, where traffic is spread over the top few paths for a destination. A single best path BGP match would hence not necessarily reveal the path taken by the traffic. By using ADD-PATH we enable the pmacct software to match on the second or third best path, making sure it is the one taken by the Netflix control plane.

We will present details on how Netflix' multi-path setup spreads the traffic over multiple providers, how the open source software pmacct works, how ADD-PATH has been implemented in pmacct and how it determines the right BGP data to match our flows.
