You know, I can't help but see parallels between this and the IP versus other protocols (esp OSI) from what I read during my stint as an undergraduate EE. (No, I'm not an EE now.) I'm sure there's plenty of grumpy telco people out there who think IP is just a hack and OSI/ATM/ISDN were the technologies that were thought out 'right' and should've caught on, damnit!
