It's all handled in the DSPs.  So if you look below at the cost difference
between a package that will handle 45 simultaneous calls (five SIMMs of
three DSPs each, each DSP can handle three simultaneous g729a streams) and
one that'll handle the full 46 (not 48 because you've got one D channel on
each PRI; it's unlikely that you'd want to sacrifice caller-ID), you wind
up having to toss out one of the three-DSP SIMMs and replace it with a
5-DSP SIMM, with some waste.
