According to CNN.com:

Internet pioneer Jon Postel dies at 55

Jon Postel, the computer pioneer who wielded enormous influence over technical
details of the Internet, died of complications from heart surgery in Los
Angeles on Saturday. Postel was considered by the White House as a crucial
player in the future of the global computer network. Although he was scarcely
known outside computer circles, Postel served as director of the Internet
Assigned Numbers Authority, which matched unique numerical addresses for
computers on the Internet with its millions of web addresses.

The driving force behind the NC is the belief that the companies who brought us
things like Unix, relational databases, and Windows can make an appliance that
is inexpensive and easy to use if they choose to do that. -- Scott Adams
