Not likely.... Here's the vision.

The video stores will operate humungo video caching servers with an ATM 
pipe to the franchise head office where *EVERY* movie ever made will be 
stored. You will be able to order any movie on the store's caching server 
and pick up a freshly made copy 20 minutes later. If they have to go to 
head office for it you will get it in 30 minutes. Since you have to go to 
the store anyway to stock up on potato chips, some drinks and to flirt 
with the pretty girl behind the counter this will be reason enough to 
pick up the tape. 20 years from now it will be just the same only using 
magneto-optical disks...

If those folks don't use VOD then it will be too expensive to implement a 
pervasive VOD network until videotel and videoconferencing have paid for 
the infrastructure.
